Visit to the Rector of Marmara University
Arayuz Campaign had examined the distance education processes of universities and published a report based thereon. The campaign team started to visit the rectors to convey the problems identified through interviews with students during the report studies and their recommendations for the new semester.
Arayuz Campaign Visiting Rectors
Emir Yıldırım and Ayşegül Uzun from Arayuz Campaign visited the rector of Marmara University, Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar. During this visit, they delivered the problems expressed by the students to the rector based on the interviews conducted with Marmara University students.
The campaign team explained that some professors overdid the assignments and gave assignments that were not possible to complete and that students were concerned about this. The rector explained that this situation can also happen in the normal process and that in such cases, the necessary warning was given to the academician who went overboard with the assignments, which resulted in a high number of students failing the course. He stated that to anything more than a warning would mean entering the academician’s sphere, so it is not possible to do more, however the objection channel is always open to students who feel that their rights have been violated.
Another problem was the situation of the students who had no internet or technological facilities. Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar said that they gave internet scholarships to their students during the pandemic and that they did not leave any student without internet. He also said that they are trying to help students with technological facilities within their means.
The issue of student-administration communication was also discussed during the meeting. Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar said that Marmara University conducted surveys among its students and the participation was quite high. He also stated that they encouraged the Student Council to work actively.
Arayuz Campaign will continue to follow the process following these meetings. They will monitor whether students’ complaints persist. You can inform the campaign team about the positive or negative developments you experience or the problems that remain unchanged.
The distance education processes of Marmara University and many other universities are reported in Arayüz Campaign’s Distance Education Report from the perspective of students.
